I think this is one of the most inspirational issues so far! The theme is “Celestial’, and in it there is such a variety of articles covering all the ways this theme can be interpreted. Sylvia French has provided us with a fabulous step-by-step tutorial for making this Comets and Planets art yarn:
Hannah Yim takes us through the creation of a gorgeous woven ‘cloud’ wallhanging
Inspiration abounds as we follow Vicki Cornish through her Artists in Residence time at a marvellous Lighthouse in Australia. What would you do if you had dedicated time and space for nothing but being creative?
I am thrilled to have some excellent information by Joan Ruane about the history, growing, and harvesting of hemp as a textile fiber, as well as how to best spin this very planet friendly fiber. It is certainly next on my list for spinning.
This is followed by another really informative article about the different types of cotton available for spinners, Elizabeth Woods gives us a deep dive into how those differences influence the final yarns, and helps with making choices when it comes to selecting spinning cottons.
There is also some incredible eye candy from Charan Sachar, photographed by Evanita Montalvo. You will love Charan’s huge spin, and his review of the EEW yardage meter which includes his way of using it to create an even better yarn, very clever!
With Jane Deane we harness the power of the Sun! Her solar dyeing with plants is an amazing tutorial that is sure to get you looking at your jars in a whole new way, I know I will be! Step by step instructions as a follow on from Janes last article that showed us just how many colours you can achieve with natural dyes.
There is more, so much more! Our regular articles are back, with Ineke’s inspirational creativity, more sheep history from New Zealand with Matthew’s article looking at the development of farming down under, and we have Megan’s inspirations from the wild world places she has travelled in. We even have a fabulous breed study from Ruth Robinson. And even that isn’t all! I hope you will enjoy lots of quiet times with this issue to take in all the great information and give your creativity a boost.
And don’t forget to partake in Module 2 of the Golden Fleece course! Arlene and I will be back again with a Zoom to discuss and share yarns and stories about this second module of our flagship creativity course for spinners!
See you soon 🙂 and happy reading
